Why You Should Drink Green Tea
Green tea is a popular source of polyphenols - powerful antioxidant compounds that offer better antioxidant protection than vitamin C. Polyphenols block the formation of abnormal cell growth, suppresses carcinogens, can destroy cancer-causing agents and reduce inflammation associated with disease.
Health experts agree that drinking two to three cups a day of green tea can provide adequate amounts of polyphenols and may reduce the risk of getting a serious illness. Polyphenols have been studied extensively and have been shown to reduce the risk of stomach, colon, lung, prostate and breast cancers.
It's recommended that green tea be consumed when it's hot because when the tea cools, polyphenols bind to the caffeine and sink to the bottom where you're less likely to drink. Instant green tea contains only trace amounts of polyphenols.
Here are some tips to helping you get the most out of your green tea:
- Add lemon or other citrus fruits to increase the bioavailability of polyphenols.
- Avoid adding milk or cream to your tea as it decreases polyphenol absorption.
- Matcha and Sencha green teas have the highest antioxidant values.
- Steep from 1 to 3 minutes.
The average cup of green tea contains 50 mg to 100 mg of caffeine so if you're sensitive to caffeine, you may want to consider making your own decaf green tea. Simply steep in hot water for 30 seconds which releases about 80% of the caffeine into the water. Drain and keep the tea leaves then add hot water and steep again.
